Choice
Giving students choice based on their interest or their
learning profile (learning styles or multiple intelligences) is paramount
in a differentiated classroom. In fact, I have listened to one of Carol
Tomlinson's trainers say that students should be given choice 35% of the
time. Wow! Below you'll find a recent (May, 2008) article about choice
from Teacher Magazine:

Choice - Offer students a variety of choices when doing a performance
assessment. Remember is that a choice utilizing technology should be
considered on a regular basis.
Content
Choice - Offering students a variety of reading selections to achieve
the learning goals. Two points to remember are: 1) The reading material
chosen must correlate with students reading levels, and 2) the material
must be tied to the skills/standards they are trying to achieve. An
example of content choice would be literature circles:

Layered
Curriculum - This strategy, from Dr. Kathie Nunley, offers opportunities
for choice as well as thinking skills according to Bloom's Taxonomy. It's
a very viable solution for all grade levels, especially high school.
