Beyond Comfort Zones
"Students need to be pushed a little farther than
they're comfortable going." (Carol Tomlinson in the video,
"Differentiating Instruction - Creating Multiple Paths for Learning.") A
variety of strategies can be used, but two of the most predominant
include:
Tiered Instruction (creating a variety of learning activities and
assignments based on student readiness - Carol Tomlinson call this a
ratcheting up or down of the challenge level.):

Below you will find a suggested
step-by-step process for tiered instruction:
-
Identify concepts to be taught for a
given subject area.
-
Develop learning targets or objectives
(what do you want students to know and be able to do)
-
Develop assessments.
-
Pre-assess student proficiency of the
targets or objectives.
-
Determine what is to be adjusted or
tiered: 1) level of complexity, 2) number of facets, 3)
concreteness/abstract, 4) amount of structure, 5) pace, 6) amount of
independence, 7) amount of open-endedness (Tomlinson)
-
Implement activities and give
assignments with consideration to type of grouping
-
Conduct checks along the way
(assessments for learning) to move students to groups, which are fluid.
Modify instruction as necessary.
-
Give assessments of learning
(summative assessments)
